Assymetric distributions are said to be "skewed". Very large degrees of skewness are very typical of things, like weight, that cannot take on values below zero, roy but can, roy in principle take on values up to roy infinity. (Other skewed distributions include family incomes in the US. That's why you'll often hear the median reported.) If you want to see a well known skewed distribution look up the "Poisson" distribution in a statistics textbook. |

| That's why I don't understand what's supposed to be epidemic internet about half of the human population being "overweight" -- if we looked at other physical characteristics like pigmentation or body internet hair, we would find lots of "overpale" and "underhirsute" folks (and pets). The definition of average does not require it. That is.. assuming that by "average" we mean the statistical "mean" and not the "median". By definition, half of all people must weight more than the "median" weight. Generally, average is conotes "mean" and not "median". But, some people do use the term in a vague way. So, who knows? The reason some people think half the population must fall above the mean and half below the mean is they assume that weight follows a bell curve. |
